Introducing Assistant Coach John Odom

Travis Odom, a native of Gastonia, North Carolina graduated from St. Paul’s High School in 2014, where he was a four-year varsity starter. He is a former middle infielder at Chowan University and Methodist University before ultimately graduating with his bachelor’s degree in Human Performance & Recreation from Claflin University in 2019. He obtained his master’s degree with a dual major in Sports Management & Sport Coaching with an emphasis in NCAA Compliance at the United States Sports Academy in 2020.

He got his start in coaching with his former high school as the hitting/infield coach where they made an appearance in the third round of the NC State playoffs. In September of 2018, he was named the hitting/infield coach at Voorhee’s College in Denmark, SC, where he had 5 players move on to sign professional contracts. In the fall of 2018, he also served as an intern for the University of South Carolina’s softball team where he was a special assistant to the hitting coach. His last college stint was at Paul D. Camp Community College in Franklin, VA, where he was the hitting/outfield coach and oversaw the strength and conditioning program during the fall of 2019.

From January 2020 through August 2021, he was the Head JV and Head Varsity assistant baseball coach at South Meck High School in Charlotte, NC where he won back-to-back conference championships while overseeing the hitters, infielders, outfielders, and the strength & conditioning program. In his time there, he helped lead the state in multiple offensive categories. In August of 2021, he accepted a position at Overhills High School in Spring Lake, NC to take the helm of the baseball program.

He has also worked in the showcase baseball scene with the Virginia Breeze and Five Star Carolina organizations as well as serving as a scout for Prep Baseball Report Virginia/DC. He’s no stranger to the summer collegiate leagues either, as he served as the hitting coach for the Berkley Bandits in the Mid-Atlantic Collegiate League during the 2018 campaign where they were the tournament runners-ups. In 2019, he was the Head Coach for the Bandits of the Puerto Rico Collegiate League, where he led them to an inaugural season playoff berth.

He holds multiple certifications such as: Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist ISSA, Driveline (Foundations of Hitting), Rapsodo (Hitting), and K-Motion. He has attended the Baseball Bureau’s Scout School as well as being a member of the Farm System and the ABCA.
