John Hagan, who is currently among the top offensive run producers at Missouri Baptist University, has signed a contract to play with the West Virginia Miners during the 2017 Prospect League baseball season this coming summer. The Miners announced his contract signing on the morning of April 7 and makes the outfielder / first baseman the 24th name to be revealed that will make up the Miners’ 28-man roster this year.

Currently listed as a utility player defensively on the Missouri Baptist website, the big 6-5, 230-pound junior, has been one of the undeniable factors with the bat that has helped propel the team to a number 22 ranking in the latest NAIA baseball poll that was released on April 4. Through games of April 6, he has played in 32 games (31 starts) for the Spartans and has a .295 batting average (33-for-112) while tying for the team lead in runs batted in with 28. He has also displayed extra-base hitting power by currently being second on the team in homers (6) and doubles (9) to go along with 25 runs scored, a slugging percentage of .536 and an on-baseball percentage of .357. He also can add speed to his offensive profile as demonstrated so far this spring by stealing nine bases in eleven attempts.

His debut season in 2016 for Missouri Baptist saw the Orlando, FL area resident hit .242 in 50 games (39 starts) with seven doubles, 23 stolen bases and an on-base percentage of .348.

His freshman season of collegiate baseball was spent at Seminole State, a junior college in his home state of Florida, where he appeared in 49 games while compiling a .266 batting average (42-for-158) that featured seven homers and 32 RBI. He also was successful on the basepaths by stealing 12 bases in 13 attempts.

The Prospect League is the premier collegiate wood bat summer baseball league in the Midwest. It has been operating in its current form since 2009 while serving the summer baseball needs of top collegiate players. The 2016 Prospect League title won by the Miners was the team’s third league championship in the last five seasons.

Season-long box seats and other ticket packages for the West Virginia Miners are already on sale for the 2017 Prospect League season, which begins on May 30 while the Miners home opener will be on June 1 versus the Butler (PA) Blue Sox.
